Obituary of Harriet Florence McCoy

Harriet Florence McCoy was born July 13, 1920 in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan to Thomas and Nellie Wallace. She was the second youngest of ten children. In 1929, Harriet's dad travelled to the Peace River Country, filed on a homestead and built a house. In the fall of 1930, her mother followed with Harriet and seven of her brothers and sisters. They travelled by car in a 1928 Chevrolet with no heat and no brakes. They arrived in Pouce Coupe on October 30, 1930, in Harriet's words "tired but happy to be pioneering a new land". The Wallace children attended the Clark school. Harriet made many lifelong friends, and enjoyed meeting up with many of them at the school reunion a few summers ago. In 1936 Harriet married Clinton McCoy and they raised five children. Harriet was always a homemaker and her children remember coming home from school to be met with the wonderful smell of homemade bread or cookies. In later years, she worked as a waitress; we all remember stories about her time at the Chicken Inn. How proud she was of her little home, she worked hard to make it a haven for all who came, no one ever left her home hungry, her door was always open. Harriet enjoyed knitting and she loved flowers. Her family was her pride and joy and she cherished the time she spent with them, from time spent visiting at her children's farms, or looking after her grandchildren, to different holidays she joined in on. She was one of the most giving people you ever knew, she had a wonderful sense of humour and spunk that no one could forget. She loved to laugh and be with the ones she loved. Harriet's faith was her mainstay for many years. Never was there a night that she would sleep without having first called the name of every one of her children, grand children and great grandchildren out to God. She leaves behind a wonderful legacy for each of us. Harriet was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Nellie; brothers William, Stanley, Harry, Allen and Carmen; sisters Isabel, Jessie, Frances, Maretha; husband Clinton McCoy; son in law Ron Crocker; infant daughter, whom she waited almost 72 years to hold in her arms. She leaves to mourn her loss and cherish her memory children, Glen (Sheila) McCoy, Gwen Viken, Audrey (Don) Elsenheimer, Milton (Bea) McCoy, Norma (Dan) Wilson, 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Harriet passed away Saturday, April 3, 2010 in Dawson Creek, BC at the age of 89 years. A funeral service was held Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at 1:00 pm at the Apostolic Lighthouse Tabernacle; Pastor James Bridges officiated; Interment followed in the Hill Haven Cemetery, Bonanza, Alberta.
