Obituary of Frank Cecil Squires
Frank Cecil Squires, a longtime resident of Dawson Creek, the last Northern Alberta Railways (NAR) agent and a WWII veteran passed away suddenly on December 14, 2013 at the age of 89 years.
Frank was born on May 12, 1924 to father John Thomas Squires from Carlton-in-Lindrick, Nottinghamshire, England and to mother Elizabeth Hazel Boone Squires from Tanasket, Washington. He was second of four children, with sisters Edna Olsen (Keremeos) and Violet Newton (Edmonton), and brother Harry Squires (Edmonton). Frank was the last surviving sibling.
Growing up in Wembley, Alberta he finished intermediate school in 1940 and joined the RCAF in 1941 at the age of 17. Stationed in England, he flew with a Lancaster bomb crew logging 33 missions and thousands of flying hours over Germany. He returned to Wembley from the war as a Flying Officer.
While working at the Krantz hardware store in Wembley, he met Edeltraudy David from Tomslake at a scratch baseball game. They were married May 5, 1948 in Waterways, Alberta where he was working at the time with the NAR. Five children followed as the family moved around to various locations on the NAR line, including Watino, Hythe, Fort McMurray and Dawson Creek. He retired from the NAR in Dawson Creek in 1985, after 38 years of service.
Frank was active in the community helping the Pouce Coupe Legion with gardening, floor curling and bowling with the seniors. He was a self made man with many business interests, but mostly he was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather.
Frank is survived by his wife of 65 years, Edeltraudy; his son Don (Liza), and his four daughters: Adele (Hap), Barbara (Glen), Darlene (Dave) and Valerie (Brad), nine grandchildren: Scot (Samantha), Sean (Ginette), Michael, Gregory, Aaron, Holly (Ray), Brett, Blaine and Dylan, as well as five great grandchildren: Eoin, Saoirse, Henry, James and Lauren.
His ashes were placed in the Tomslake Cemetery Columbarium during a private family ceremony on Friday, December 20, 2013.
He will be missed by all that knew and love him.
