Obituary of Julia Beatrice Johnson

Julia Johnson, a long time resident of Dawson Creek, B.C. passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 in Dawson Creek at the age of 90 years. Julia was born on June 16, 1923 in the hamlet of Stry, Alberta, which is now known as Vilna. She was the sixth child in a family of nine. Her parents were Joseph and Anne Chmielewski, Joe a Polish immigrant and her mother Anne an American citizen. Her parents, along with Paul, Frank, Albina, Martin, Peter, Julia, Lawerence and John came into the Parkland District in 1929. It was a long, wet journey and the older boys did a lot of walking on foot. There was only so much room in the wagon, and John was just a baby. Victoria was later born on the farm in Parkland where they chose to farm. Julia remembered having her seventh birthday in the new house being built, and it had no roof. Julia was a good student, achieving many awards. One year she was awarded a wrist watch for scholastic achievement, and was so proud. She often said she wished she had the opportunity to go further but in those days times were tough and money was scarce. Julia still had in her possession a certificate for penmanship given to her in 1936. Julia married Lloyd Johnson on April 9, 1942, this was a 62 years marriage at the time of Lloyd's (Jack) passing in July of 2004. Julia was always an asset to the community, she served the Red Cross for 30 plus years, for which she made and donated at least two quilts per year. She loved to garden, and her garden showed it. It was always weed free and full of tasty vegetables and beautiful flowers. In the fall she would preserve fruits and vegetables, canned meats, made awesome jams and jellies to accompany the homemade bread, cinnamon buns, you name it. Julia's house was always a place chosen for afternoon tea but it was always a greater place to her three young children, for she could always be counted on to be home. Her family chose to return her to their father on April 9, 2014, which would have been their 72nd anniversary. Left to mourn her passing but celebrate her life are Verna (Burgen), Beverly, Gordon (Fay), stepson Bob (Barbara), and their respective families of six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and three great, great grandchildren. Along with her sister Victoria (Floyd), brother Lawerence (Mabel), and Jack's last sister Dorothy Bedell, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 2:00 pm from Reynars Funeral Chapel. Pastor Tim Johnson officiated. For friends so wishing, donations may be made in memory of Julia to the Senior Citizens Hall, 1101 McKellar Avenue, Dawson Creek, B.C.V1G 2S2 Very Respectfully Reynars Funeral Home & Crematorium
