Obituary of Vera Anna Lekavy

Vera Anna Lekavy was born in Dolni Bojanovice, Czechoslovakia on August 4, 1923 to parents Florian and Anna Psovsky. On February 27, 1927 several families left their home land and began the long journey by boat and train to Canada, Settling in Margo, Saskatchewan on a farm already purchased by her father. During the second world war, Vera was one of many prairie girls that went to Toronto and she worked in a factory that made parts for the Lancaster bomber plane. It was in Toronto that her first son Guy was born, and she was happy to reconnect with him many years later. After the war in 1948, Vera returned to Saskatchewan and on October 5, 1950 married John Lekavy whose family had also came from Czechoslovakia. They were blessed with three children Bonnie, James, and Ritchie. In July 1962, they sold the farm and settled on a small farm in Chetwynd, where daughter Melanie was born. This now made their family complete. Vera's life was busy, she raised her family, worked hard on the farm, worked in a local hardware store, and she was very involved in her community and church. Life was busy with many neighborhood picnics and parties, and she never missed a dance or a Fireman's Ball; she loved to dance and her and John were known as very good dancers. Vera belonged to the Firettes, and was also a charter member of the Hospital Auxiliary and belonged for over 30 years until it disbanded. She was a integral part of the Senior Citizens Society, and this year is her fortieth year in her beloved Catholic Women's League. In her later years Vera travelled quite a bit. There were Senior's trips, Senior's games, several cruises, and a trip to the Czech Republic. She thoroughly enjoyed this time of her life. Vera will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved her. Vera entered eternal rest on Monday, June 16, 2014 in Chetwynd, at the age of 90 years with her family by her side.
