Obituary of Agnes Gunter

Agnes (Jantz) Gunter, longtime resident of Pouce Coupe, B.C. passed away peacefully in the company of her loving family at the Dawson Creek and District Hospital on July 15th, 2014 at the age of 95. Agnes was born in Swalwell, Alberta on July 3, 1919 to Peter and Katharina Jantz, the fifth of fourteen children. During her childhood, the family lived in various communities, including Swalwell, Three Hills, Granger and finally Crooked Creek, Alberta. Agnes was working in Edmonton at the time she met Aubrey John Gunter. On November 14, 1941 they married in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Soon after, they moved to Prince Rupert, B.C. where Aubrey worked in the shipyards. During their time in Prince Rupert, their daughters Helen and Irma were born. After the war ended and the shipyard was closed, Agnes and Aubrey moved to the Peace Country and settled in Tupper where they owned and operated the general store and post office. They later moved to Pouce Coupe where they have resided since. Another daughter, Georgina was welcomed to the family, followed by two sons, Lloyd and Jeffrey. Agnes was an avid gardener and crafter and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extented family, neighbours and friends. Visitors from near and far were always welcomed with or without notice as they entered the house with the yellow door (a symbol of welcoming.) Agnes lived her life with purpose to the end, keeping busy making crafts and fixing puzzles. She also enjoyed watching curling and keeping up with current world events. In earlier years, Agnes loved to play cards as she socialized with family and neighbours. No matter what was going on, Agnes and Aubrey always put the family first. Agnes was predeceased by her husband Aubrey, her daughters Helen (Haydey) and Georgina (Neish,) her grandchildren Debbie and Keith Haydey, her parents Peter and Katharina Jantz, her brothers and sisters Martha, Simon, John, Leonard, Peter, Kathleen, Mary, Samuel and Andrew. She also leaves many beloved great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and extended family to mourn her passing. At her request, no service will be held. Expressions of sympathy may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
