Obituary of Ellen Kelly

Ellen was born in Edmonton Alberta, March 29th, 1931 to Curt and Eva Roberts. Ellen was the eldest child of the family followed by brothers Day, Bud and sister Darlene. Growing up in the Roberts household was never dull. All the kids were very active, be it indoors or out. They all skated, played childhood games such as hide and seek, had neighborhood ball games and enjoyed bowling. They were members of the Teen Town Club which had a mayor and chief of police and held teen dances in their own teen town hall. The kids in the west end of the village of Dawson Creek called themselves the West End Kids and included the Brown's, Moffatt's, Webb's, Schilds, Clease's, Sekyer's, and others. Ellen was musically inclined, she tap danced and played the drums with the "Rhythm Boys" Band. She met Vern Kelly while working as an usherette at the Vogue Theatre. At that time usherettes were dressed in smart looking uniforms and would show people to theirs seats with a flashlight. She married Vern on June 13th, 1951. On January 20th, 1955 their son Blake came along. Their life together was at times a hectic one, as Vern was mainly a hard working truck driver, who was also a heavy equipment operator, but always in BC. As a result the young family moved often to where the work was located and they became trailer park residents. Life was good. Vern and Ellen spent 59 years together until Vern's passing in 2010. Aunty Ellen spent all of her married life taking care of others. If not her son and husband, many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces. In more recent years, Ellen enjoyed her many friends she met while playing bingo. Ellen was always busy doing something around the house: cleaning, baking or getting up before the birds to make Vern's breakfast and pack a lunch for him. As years went by the related families grew and we all seemed to gather with the Kelly's. We spent many a Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, camping and even summer vacation together. Sometimes there was up to 20 of us for a sit down meal which Aunty Ellen had prepared. Over the years the Roberts family held many family reunions which many were able to attend and recall the good times. We had many adventures together. Family and friends were everything to Aunty Ellen. As time went by and families seemed to go their own way, we spent less time together as a group, but Aunty Ellen always kept in touch, either by letter, postcards or phone calls. Aunty Ellen was a special person. She always found the most unique gifts for everyone. Be it Christmas or birthdays, we could always rely on Aunty Ellen for something to make us laugh. There were times when there were so many of us, she had a hard time getting our names straight. She would work her way down the list till she finally had the right name, then she would laugh at herself. Later in life Aunty Ellen raised the most donations while riding the "Big Bike" to raise money for the Cancer Drive. Right till the end Aunty Ellen had a great sense of humor. She had such a warm smile and a genuine heart. She always signed her letters and cards with, "Live, love, laugh." When we would say, "We love you Aunty!" she would always reply "Love you more!" Well Aunty Ellen, we will try to follow your lead: We will live as though heaven is on earth. We will laugh as laughter is the shortest distance between two people and a day without laughter is a wasted day, And we will love, like there is no tomorrow. Just as you did, we all do: "Love you more" Service 1:00 pm Wednesday, September 24, 2014 Bergeron Funeral Services & Crematorium Ltd. 10200 - 17th street DAWSON CREEK, British Columbia, Canada V1G4C2
