Obituary of Gail Adalheidur Blocka

Gail was born on August 25, 1937 in Sexsmith, Alberta and passed away at home in Dawson Creek on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015 at the age of 77 years. She was the only child born to Matthew and Lily Young (Einarson). Sadly mom never got to know her mother as she died when mom was only 8 months old. Her dad spent much of the year working away from home and Mom was mostly raised by her grandparents on their farm near Sexsmith. Her grandparents, Jon and Adelheidur Einarson, were immigrants from Iceland and mom grew up speaking both Icelandic and English. Mom moved to Dawson Creek in 1951 and attended grades 9-12. She graduated from South Peace Secondary School in 1956. In 1958 she met her future husband Walter who, like her dad, also worked in gravel crushing and road construction. They were married in November 1962 and 9 months later Darcy was born. Kevin followed in 1965 and Deanne in 1968. Mom was a very talented pianist and loved to play but was notoriously shy about playing in front of others. Mom had a soft spot for children and animals. Her house, which Mom and Dad bought in 1966 and where she lived for the rest of her life, quickly became the place all of the neighborhood kids gathered to play. There was almost always a pet cat or dog. The cats especially, quickly became mom's best friends and she doted on them. Sadly her last cat, Mischief, who was with her for 12 years, died shortly before Mom became ill in 2013. In 1990 she became a Grandma for the first time when Mathew was born to Darcy and Georgia. He was followed by Jennifer in 1993 and Nicole in 1994. In 1998 Allison was born to Kevin and Donna followed by her last grandchild, Benjamin, in 2000. She was devoted to her grandchildren and would do anything for them. Walter passed away in 2001 in their 39th year of marriage. Mom's life continued to center around her children and grandchildren and her love of music and the piano. Now we must say goodbye to our mother, our grandmother, our friend. She has fought the good fight. She has finished the race. She has kept the faith and she has earned her rest. So rest in peace gentle soul. We will miss you.
