Obituary of Calvin Lee Haugen

Calvin Haugen, a long-time resident of East Doe River, passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 in Vancouver, B.C. at the age of 60 years. Calvin was born April 11, 1954, in Pouce Coupe, British Columbia to Kenneth and Eva Haugen. He was the fourth of seven children. Since the day Dad was born farming was in his blood, but so was hard work. There wasn't a thing that Dad couldn't do. Many years you would catch him sitting at the kitchen table early in the morning drinking a few pots of coffee, scratching his head figuring out what he had to do that day and it wasn't for a lack of things to do, it was what he was going to do first. He always had things on the go from farming and trucking to mechanics, Dad loved to fix. In February of 1973, at a East Pouce Coupe dance Mom and Dad met. A few weeks after, Mom introduced Candi to Dad, his first baby. In June the same year Mom and Dad were married and living in a ten wide in Doe River. In June of 1974 along came Miranda. In May of 1978 Lynette arrived, and in August of 1980 Terence was born to complete our family. Through the many years of Mom and Dad's marriage there were ups and downs of different circumstance but through it all the love that they shared always prevailed and it outweighed anything else. In the 1990's Mom and Dad bought a farm in Doe River. It was there that Dad bought his first Mack Truck and converted it into a water truck and out to the patch he went. Dad was such an entrepreneur he was always busy and if he thought he had a few minutes to spare he was on the phone lining something else up. Dad always tried to be there for all of his family if they were ever in need physically or emotionally, he was always so good to talk to as Dad loved his family, he had losses in his life. His older brother Lyle, uncle Tom Reinitz, his nephew Darren Weipert and his own Mother and Father but they never left his heart. Dad was such a worrier he worried about everyone always needed to know what everyone was doing and whether or not you needed it he would tell you what he thought good or bad. Dad spoke of us kids as his babies, I am sure some of you have heard before, and then there are his grandbabies that he was so in love with we could never write into words how much he loved them. It was unusual if you didn't talk to Dad everyday or second day, always excited to tell him the "news" of today good or bad, either he made that call or was expecting yours. Dad was never short of helpers on the farm. Terence or Miranda in the field, Lynette in the kitchen cooking. We remember when she forgot to cook the rice making her first "porcupine balls" and Dad telling her that they were so good as he crunched down on them. Or the look on Dad's face when Candi who was covered in green juice had just taken the weed whacker to some of the weeds in the garden. There were so many friends and family members who were a big part of our lives out at the farm. Our Father was a huge animal lover, his fury babies owned him. Dad loved them so much, I am sure many of you heard the way he would talk to them in his baby voice. Hoochie dog, Mr. Hyde, Screwie-Louie, the chickens, cows, horse and pigs. Even the wildlife that walked on the farm. Dad always had a garden and never a small one. He was always so proud of his garden and even though his kids were grown he still planted about 150 hills of potatoes. Swiss chard, turnips, beets, tomatoes, peas, carrots. This year he even grew corn he was so proud as it did so well, he always had extra for family and friends. Our Dad was a dreamer and from early on dad always said he wanted to have the homestead he grew up on, where the trees that his mom and brother Lyle grew, and with his will and determination dad was able to see this dream become a reality and making this his home for the last few years. Having his own shop was also a dream of Dad's. With the help of his son and the Doe Creek Colony, his plans, vision and hard work, there is now four walls and a roof. Dad your unconditional love and the values you imprinted in our lives will never be forgotten. You are forever in our hearts.
