Obituary of Margaret Hunder

Margaret Hunder 1923 ~ 2015 How do you describe the life of a woman such as Margaret Hunder? It's impossible to honor her in a way that we feel would do her justice but here is a brief glimpse into the life of a woman who touched so many. Margaret Elizabeth Perner was born into Saskatchewan in 1923 and was raised on a farm in Hillmont, with her sisters Mary, Terry and brothers Leo, Billy and Joe. Here she completed school up to grade 8. During World War II she lived and worked in Thunder Bay, Ontario where she was a welder who worked on aircrafts. After the war, she returned to Saskatchewan where she met Albert Hunder and they married on November 23, 1948. Here their first four children were born. They later moved to Pouce Coupe and continued farming and having babies, 12 children in all, Merle, Myles, Barry, Sharon, Gordon, Randy, Glen, Murray, Dixie, Brent, Gwen, and Reg. Margaret's brother-in-law Allie shared in their lives and worked the farm with the family in Pouce Coupe. Margaret was stricken with polio in 1956 and was sent to Vancouver for treatment and recovery returning to her family as soon as she was able. Her next move was to Oliver, B.C., where they lived for 16 years. While living in Oliver, she worked in a fruit packing plant and was able to pursue her love of gardening. After 37 years of marriage, Albert passed away. Margaret was later joined in Oliver by her daughter Sharon and her family. She moved to Kamloops in 1991, where she lived close to two of her children and their families. This new home was important to Margaret because she was able to pursue her passions of gardening and being with family. She remained 14 years in Kamloops before she returned to the Peace River country where she lived with her daughter Gwen and her family. She spent her last years in Rotary Manor where she was surrounded by her family and caring staff. Margaret was a gentle soul who loved unconditionally and forgave freely. Her love came with no strings attached. Family was her joy and she treasured each of her children, their spouses and her grandchildren. Second to spending time with her family, Margaret loved to spend her days gardening, crocheting, and playing cards. She was often seen in her yard wearing a floppy hat with dirt on her hands and knees or in her chair surrounded by yarn and half crocheted blankets. When anyone came to visit they could not leave until she challenged them to a game or two of cards. Her children and grandchildren can attest to these passions. More often than not they were next to her having been encouraged to help her weed, untangle some yarn, or even spend even an hour or two playing cards. Along with her green thumb she also had a talent for turning a penny into a dollar and found value in EVERYTHING. Her house was full of treasures, some useful and some not so useful, but she would keep itjust in case. Margaret was a devout Catholic throughout her life. Her beliefs and love of God was personal and inspirational. Her belief helped her persevere through tough times and live her life with a sense of peace and purpose. Margaret was predeceased by her husband Albert, her sons, Gordon, Murray, Brent, Merle and Barry, her son-in-law Brian, her sister Mary, her brothers Leo and Billy and her brother in law Allie. Margaret was deeply loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
