Obituary of Alma Magdalene Lefferson

Alma Magdalene Lefferson was born in Lovett, Ontario on March 2, 1918 to George and Emma Brownscombe. She had one sister; Esther Taylor, and two brothers; Lorne and Robert Brownscombe. When she was about 10 years old, the family moved out west. They lived in Cloverdale, B.C., Rockyford, Alberta, Hythe, Alberta and Tupper, B.C. before settling in Gundy in 1930. After completing grade 8, Alma worked at a boarding house on the Gundy Ranch as a housekeeper and cook, looking after a family of four as well as four hired men for $5.00 per month and her room and board. She met Harold Lefferson and they were married on December 18, 1935 and were married for 73 years. Alma and Harold had ten children; George, Eva, Leona, Chris, Harley, Janet, Sharon, Jean, Sandra and Danny. Alma didn't have an easy life. In the winter, she packed snow to melt for water and in summer she packed water from the creek. She would heat it on the stove for washing clothes and then pack it out again. She didn't get central heating or running water until 1974. She enjoyed having company and would always have coffee, tea, cake and cookies for when someone stopped by, and if it was meal time, she would be putting on another plate. Alma always had a big garden and enjoyed her flowers. She said she liked the garden because it gave her time to herself. In 2011, Alma left the farm and moved to the Hythe Pioneer Home, where she stayed until March 2015. She was then moved to the Fairview Continuing Care Home. While she was there, she fell and broke her hip which did not allow her to walk again. Alma is survived by her: 8 children; Eve Regner, Leona (Wes) Sipma, Chris (Lois Patterson) Lefferson, Janet (Ray) Moore, Sharon (Terry) Seaby, Jean (Rocky) Fields, Sandra (Wayne) James and Dan (Susie Graham) Lefferson, 27 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren, brother in-law; Alan Lefferson, sister in-law; Dorothy Knopp, many nieces, nephews and friends. Alma was predeceased by her: parents; George and Emma Brownscombe, husband; Harold, sons; George and Harley, great-grandson; Brenden Fields, sons in-law; Wes Sipma and Ray Moore, sister; Esther Taylor, brothers; Lorne and Robert Brownscombe, sisters in-law; Bessie Lefferson, Alice Merrick and Mary Brownscombe, brothers in-law; Charley Taylor, Slim Merrick, Pete Knopp and Jack Lefferson. Alma Lefferson, a resident of Hythe, Alberta, formerly of Gundy, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 in Fairview, Alberta at the age of 97 years. Alma's family would like to invite everyone to celebrate her life on Monday, August 10, 2015 at 2:00 pm (B.C. time), at the Gundy Community Hall, Gundy, Alberta.
