Obituary of Mervin James Grexton

Mervin Grexton, a long time resident of Chetwynd, B.C. passed away on Monday, December 28, 2015 in Chetwynd at the age of 75 years. Mervin James Grexton was born on April 12, 1940 in Matheson, Ontario and was the eldest child of Alf and Myrtle Grexton. Merv had an infectious laugh and a great sense of humor. He loved to play pranks on friends and family, and always gave a helping hand when needed. Merv was a hard worker and worked many jobs; he was a farmhand, grocery store clerk, worked at a Coca Cola plant in Ontario, and was a sawmill worker in B.C. Eventually he took up the trade of a diamond driller which took him all over Canada and he saw almost every area of Canada except the Maritimes. Merv and Julie were married in September of 1965 in Dawson Creek, B.C. After working the first few years at sawmills in Chetwynd and Hudsons Hope, Merv got a job diamond drilling in Hope, B.C. where they stayed for almost 30 years. His job often took him away for 6-8 weeks at a time but when his camp jobs were close enough to home Julie and the kids joined him on weekends for fishing and camping. Merv retired in 2005 and he and Julie decided to return to where they began. They sold their home in Hope and moved back to Chetwynd. He loved to bring out his guitar, sit by the campfire, sing songs with family, or make up some of his own. Merv enjoyed his vegetable garden and took pride in his little orchard of grapes, strawberries, apples, plums, pears, and peaches. Merv was always proud of his children and grandchildren. The joy of Merv's life the past five years has been his great granddaughters, Emma and Faith. He has enjoyed many a chuckle at their antics. Merv was predeceased by his parents Alfred and Myrtle, his sister Donna (Don) Doey, brother John, and his father-in-law Gordon Roberts. Merv is survived by his loving wife of 50 years; Julie, their children: Darrin Grexton, Dorinda (Rob) Limb, and Darcy (Sarah) Grexton, three grandchildren: Chris (Jackie) Limb, Larissa (James) Alexander, and Deanna Limb, and two great granddaughters Emma and Faith Alexander. Along with his sister Doreen (Tom) Doey, brothers: Allan (Judy) Grexton, Dan Grexton, Judy (Boyd) Oliver, Dave (Laura Lee) Grexton, and his mother-in-law Doris Roberts, brothers-in-law Gary (Joyce) Roberts and Ross (Deborah) Roberts, sister-in-law Holly (Russ) Gilmore, as well as many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service was held on Friday, January 8, 2016 at 1:00 PM at the Chetwynd Fellowship Baptist Church. Pastor Bill Evans officiated. Interment will be held at a later date.
