Obituary of Sylvia Doreen Johnson

Sylvia Johnson July 31, 1934 to July 20th, 2016 Sylvia Johnson was born, Sylvia Doreen Edmonds, July 31st, 1934, in Arcola Saskatchewan to Mike and Margari Edmonds. At age 13 Sylvia and her family moved to Dawson Creek, where she attended and graduated from South Peace Senior Secondary. Like most high school kids she had a part time job working at the Vogue Theatre selling popcorn and pop. After graduating Sylvia worked at a family run dress store, Wades Ladies Style Shop. She told the story many times to her daughters and later to her granddaughters that she spent more money than what she made, buying dresses at the store. Sylvia had a love for dance, on weekends she and her sister Bernice would attend dances, where she eventually met her love of her life, Spike Johnson they had previously met at the local post office, all it took was a local dance, and you know how it goes. Spike and Sylvia later became founding members of the Dawson Creek Square Dancing club. Many memorable weekends were spent square dancing around the Peace River Country. Spike and his cousin Richard Johnson, one Saturday, decided instead of working on the farm they would elope to Grande Prairie and get married. So, on April 1, 1954, Spike and Sylvia, Richard and Lois eloped to Grande Prairie. They thought they had fooled everyone, but when Spike and Sylvia entered the Church, Sylvia's, Spikes and Richards's parents were waiting. You have to remember this was before texting, Facebook and twitter, so to this date Sylvia and Spike didn't know how the parents found out about the wedding. Well, a year and a bit passed after the wedding, and Lana, there first daughter arrived, two more years past and Linda came into Sylvia's and Spikes lives. Finally four year after Linda, Lori made the Johnson family 5. Mon's life, simply put was very full, always busy, getting the three girls ready for a rodeo or attending another parade which the girls and the family horses were always in. Mile 5, the farm, became a second home to the family, family rodeos, camping, hunting, fishing was the norm. As long as the family was involved it didn't matter what was taking place. Family was the most important thing in her life. Sylvia and Spike bought the local bowling lanes in 1978 and again her life changed. During the years at the bowling lanes it seemed Sylvia became friends with almost everyone in Dawson Creek. She was always the lady who organized bowing trips, and activities. If you ask her close friends they all will say Sylvia could plan anything and no matter what it was it always would be a wonderful experience for all who attended. When Sylvia sold her home and moved into her apartment, the complex community quickly recognized Sylvia's talent and convinced her to organize most of the complexes activities. She will dearly be missed by all. When asked what Sylvia meant to them, most would say she was a very kind person. Some say you can judge one's life by the experiences you take with you when you meet God. Mon's pockets are overflowing. She was always part of everything her three girls were involved in while they were growing up, she was an active member of the Women's Hospital Auxiliary, she enjoyed a life time of travel with her husband and later with her close friends and family, and she was never idle. Even as recent as last Saturday, Mon was out at Mile 5, the farm, enjoying the warm loving experience of family, I was sitting next to her , she was explaining to me how her grandkids Ty and Hailey and great grandson Dash were flying the kite incorrectly. I pointed out to her the blame clearly was with the two older ones Ty and Hailey, as Dash was only 3, she laughed. Mon's wit and humor was subtle but large at the same time. Recently Mon's sugar balance went so high that she probably should have been in a comma. The girls finally got her balanced and to ensure things were OK they took a blood sample from one of Mon's fingers. The sample confirmed everything was fine again. Mon held up the finger that was tested and said, that's a good one, I'm going to save this finger and use it again. Sylvia was predeceased by her husband Spike, mother and father Margari and Mike, Sister Bernice her brother in law Joe and her nephew Micky. Sylvia is survived by her children Lana Linda and Lori, her son in laws Tom Ben and Casey, her grandchildren Jamie, Kari, Geoff, Justine, Adrian, Nikki, Ty, and Hailey. Her nephews Rocky Carnie and Darwin. And two great grandchildren Dash and Abbi. We know God has taken your hand and is gently guiding you on your new journey, we love you mom, gramma and auntie.
