Obituary of Betty Viola Mae "Nanny" Phillippe

Betty Phillippe (Nanny), passed away on Friday, October 14, 2016 in Rotary Manor, Dawson Creek, B.C. at the age of 90 years. Nanny was born Barbara Viola Mae Murphy, she was better known as Betty, Bingo Betty, but mostly Nanny. She was born in Yellowgrass, Saskatchewan on May 16, 1926 to parents Ethel Mae Collins and William John Murphy. She was the fourth of five children. Nanny attended school in Saskatoon Lake, Alberta and later met Fredrick Arthur Phillippe. In 1947, they were married January 23, in Grande Prairie, Alberta. They were living in Berwyn, Alberta when they had their first child Jim in 1947. They moved to Wembley, where they had Ross in 1949. After that they moved to Hythe, Alberta, then to Beaverlodge, Alberta, where Ron and Don, the twins, were born. Moving on to Tupper, where Grandpa Phillippe had a farm over looking Swan Lake. Later they lived in Pouce Coupe, where their three children were born Darlene, Shirley, and Ray. Nanny had a passion for a lot of things and is remembered for many of these. She loved playing baseball, bowling, square dancing and berry picking. Saskatoon picking, she would take the grandkids out, hand them a water pail, which seemed like a forty five gallon barrel to them and you didn't go home until it was full. But it didn't end there, they had to go home and clean, sort and remove all the stems in freezing cold garden hose water. The perk of child labour, was there was always endless pies and muffins for everyone. Nanny's rhubarb/strawberry crisps were legendary. People from across the nation would bring bundles of rhubarb in order to secure a pie or pan of crisp. Nanny enjoyed playing card games, Cribbage, she loved playing in tournaments. Canasta and thirty one she would play with anyone and everyone, kids, adults it didn't matter and she played 31 a lot with Ray at home. Her Irish heritage, shone through when playing games cause she truly had the luck of the Irish. Nanny will be missed by all those who knew and loved her. Nanny was predeceased by her loving Husband; Fred Phillippe, Son; Don Phillippe, and Brothers; Jim and Earle Murphy. Nanny is survived by her Children; Jim (Terry), Ross (Judy), Ron (Heather), Shirley (Darwin), Darlene (Bryan) and Raymond, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
