Obituary of Charles Clifford "Chuck" Campbell

Charles (Chuck) Clifford Campbell was born November 21, 1925 in Edmonton, Alberta and died at the age of 91 February 13, 2017 in Dawson Creek. At 3 months of age, he was sent to live with his grandparents, Mary Dee and Floyd Strong in Dawson Creek. He lived a very happy childhood as Charlie Strong and often told of his exploits as a kid growing up in Dawson Creek. When he was 3 years old, his Grandfather died and it was left to his Grandmother to raise him, until her passing when he was 12. During the time his Grandmother was raising him they had a hired hand named Henry Lindberg, cousin to the famous pilot, Charles Lindberg, who was a huge influence on Charlie's life. After his Grandmother's passing, Charlie was sent to Whiterock, B.C. to live with his mother, Elsie Dee Campbell. Chuck joined the Armed Forces in 1940 and was released in 1942 when it was discovered he was underage, only 16 years old. When the minimum age was reduced to 17, he jumped to enlist and spent time overseas in England, Holland, and Belgium until fighting in Europe stopped in 1945. He was released from active duty in 1947. In 1961, he began employment at the RCEME Workshop Detachment in Chilliwack as a civilian and later retired after more than 25 years of combined active and civilian service. Chuck married his first wife "Torchy" (Mildred Walker) June 3, 1947 and lived happily with her until she passed away in 1984. He eventually made his way back to Dawson Creek where he married Maureen Keilbart. Chuck and Maureen had been originally introduced in 1946 by Maureen's brother, George Magill. Maureen and Chuck were married October 11, 1997. They enjoyed travelling, visiting relatives, and exploring creek bottoms and potential gold deposits. Chuck was a Mason and a Shriner. He held this as a great responsibility and a lifelong commitment. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Maureen, four stepdaughters Karen Kuenzl, Cheryl (Tim) Hartnell, Janice (Bob) Scott, and Leanna (Ken) Scott, as well as 9 grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren. A Celebration of Life was held March 2, 2017 at Bergeron's Chapel with Pastor Owen Scott officiating. Interment followed March 3 in Dawson Creek City Cemetery.
