Obituary of Troy George Streeper

Troy was born on July 20, 1961 in the Fort Nelson Airport Hospital, the first son to George and Florence. A longtime resident of Dawson Creek, he passed away suddenly on February 16, 2017. Troy attended schools in Fort Nelson and Dawson Creek The GW Carlson in Fort Nelson as well as the Nan Streeper School. Canalta Elementary in Dawson Creek, as well as Central Junior High and South Peace Secondary, where he graduated in 1979 with a respectable Dogwood, C+, B and A grades, Metal class was his #1. Troy is remembered for being a happy baby, a busy little boy with an active imagination. He had a great sense of humor. His smile lit up his face and made his eyes twinkle. He loved to tease and he loved to laugh, he wasn't fussy it was either AT you or WITH you. He was a very good two-stepper and always had music playing. He played baseball with the Dawson Creek Knights of Columbus Yankees; he had incredible ball sense, a very competitive nature, and was a very talented left-handed pitcher. In 1973, the Yankees won the Major Little League title. They competed in the Regional Play Downs in Prince George. The Local newspaper headline caption read: "MAGIC SOUTH PAW CHUCKER". In 1977, Troy played right wing for the Midget Rep hockey team with Rob & Brent Beaven, Ron Hall, Gary Cantlon, Marvin Philips, Larry Schallock, Peter Villers, Billy Wiens, Rod McCormick, Jeff Ward, Gordie Gairdner (Sumo). Just a few home grown names a lot of you will recognize. His love of sports and athleticism was always evident, earning him ribbons and more importantly bragging rights at school track meets. He was a good badminton player with endless hours spent on the tables in the basement honing his pool & ping pong playing skills. He liked to downhill ski and snowmobile. Troy had many adventures, one of the earliest memories was the baby mice he found under a bale of hay. With grand plans of joining a circus, he just knew he could train them to do all sorts of things to enable him to travel and be mega rich! His love of animals, especially horses, had him competing in gymkhana and entering local rodeos. He was a member of the South Dawson 4H club. That love and horse sense took him on the road in 1987 and years after with his business Just-a-Mere Pony Ring, traveling to midways and small towns across BC, the Island, and the Mainland, he managed to get a spot at the Kelowna Regatta and the PNE. Rides were $1.50 with his motto THIS IS THE ONLY BUSINESS WHERE PEOPLE DON'T MIND BEING TAKEN FOR A RIDE. Can't you see that grin? Troy had a talent for woodwork that was incredible. Having an excellent eye with wood, he spent time with Uncle Barney Streeper in his basement wood shop as a young kid. In woodwork class in high school he made a beautiful table for his Mom and a 6 drawer dresser for his nephew. He loved his old Rambler car, the 53 truck and his green Chev truck. He fixed and puttered with them and although they were his most prized possessions, he loaned them to Trisha and Dallas. Troy was both a trucker and a boater. The first working boat trip sealed his passion for the river. He could read the water with confidence and loved all of his time that he spent boating and barging. As Captain, along with freshly graduated sister Trisha as his deckhand, they ran the 317 Ferry. Troy and his Dad, George, operated the Clayhurst Ferry Crossing until the bridge was put in. Troy took over the boat and barge by himself and hauled freight on the Liard River for several years. He drove gravel truck on the highway construction stretch at Trutch; hauled a load of hay from Dawson Creek to Fairbanks Alaska; then put a winch on and went to work for Ron May moving rigs. He worked for Swanberg, Borek, Land Transport & Mullen. He was a competent trucker. Troy always loved little kids and especially babies. It was during the midway years that Ashley became a part of Troy's life, a big sister to Kyle Trevor born on December 19, 1995, affectionately known by the nickname Whitey, by his Dad! Kelli Taylor joined their family February 2, 1999 with a head of beautiful red hair. He beamed with pride in pictures and in speaking about his kids. Grandson Jack, Troy's first grandchild was born on November 22, 2015; just the mention of Jack would bring a smile to his face. He had just recently met his granddaughter Kiahna. In 2008, after having extensive and invasive surgery for cancer of the throat, some long 8 years later Troy received the results of a cancer free checkup. Troy was predeceased by his brothers Trenton and Trevor. He is survived by his parents, George & Florence Streeper; sisters Trudy (Marvin) Meeres, Trisha (Calvin) Wyatt; son Kyle; daughter Kelli (Shaunn); grandson Jack; daughter Ashley (Chuck); granddaughter Kiahna; nephews Dallas and Cody (Lisa) Meeres, Kail and Myles(Kobi) Ethier, Shayna (Tim) Smith; great-niece Ella Smith; great-nephews Levi, Daxen, Crew and Parx Meeres, Roman and Tucker Ethier; as well as numerous aunties, uncles, and cousins. Farewell messages from his kids: From Kelli: Rest in peace Dad, I love you so much. You will always hold a special place in my heart. From Ashley: It is with heavy heart that I have to say goodbye to my stepdad. We may have grown apart over the years, but always remember the good times. You took me in as your own and made your family, my family, and I'll forever be grateful for that. You taught me so much in this game of life and I have not taken any of that for granted. Your three children have grown into wonderful adults and that's because of YOU. Thank you for the time we had. Rest easy Dad and say hi to all the family up there! From Kyle: He taught me a lot about logic and constructive thinking especially in this circumstance. He wouldn't want me to be anything but strong and for me to look back at who he was as a man and celebrate who he was. I'm learning a lot from this experience as well, about myself and things I regret, but all in all I'm learning the full value of the man I lost and for that I am grateful. It's sad that it is only after I can no longer show him my appreciation. All I can do is what I feel will make his memory proud. I appreciate everyone's support. Love ya Pops, I hope you know I always have. Rest easy and thank you for making me the man I have grown to be.
