Obituary of Garnet Ivison Gibson

Garnet Gibson, a long time resident of the Dawson Creek, BC, passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 in Dawson Creek at the age of 90 years. Garney will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him, most of all by his wife and partner of 68 years, Margaret. Born in Swalwell, Alberta, Garney spent his growing years in the surrounding area including Carbon and Calgary. He had a natural gift with horses and broke, wrangled, herded and cowboyed until he met and married local sweetheart Margaret Webb in 1949. Garn and Margaret lived in Carbon and Nevis until they heard the call of the west and moved to BC in 1961 with their three children; Roy, Bonita and Bernard. Mount Lemoray was the first stop for the family where Garnet worked on the oil rigs and pipeline construction while Margaret worked in the Caf. They made many good friends and the kids enjoyed the one room school house and fishing in the creeks. Next the family moved to Bonanza, Alberta where they homesteaded for a number of years while Garnet cleared land for local property owners. Following the birth of their youngest child Rena, the family moved to Dawson Creek where they lived for the next 50 years. Garney was a talented welder and worked in the field, at Finning and eventually in his own shop, Gibsons Welding in Rolla. Garnet is survived by and will be greatly missed by his wife; Margaret, sons; Roy (Anka) and Bernard (Sonia) and daughters; Bonita (Al) and Rena (Bernie), 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, Ed and Cathy Sargent and their children (Friends so close they feel like family) and many others. The family extends sincere thanks to: Kelly Thompson (granddaughter) and her family (Tyler, Austen and Dreyton) for the generous amount of care and support during Grandpas illness. The rest of the family is truly grateful. Dr. Hargreaves and his staff as well as all of the staff at Rotary Manor for their kindness.
