Obituary of Donald Haddow

Donald Russel Haddow 1922 - 2017 Dad was the second child of Florence and Russel, born October 8, 1922 at their farm near Willmar, Saskatchewan. He was 12 when they packed up and moved to the Peace Country in the midst of the Dirty Thirties. He met Mom (Elisabeth) when the Jorgensens moved from Tupper to Dawson Creek, and married her in 1948. Together they started a dairy farm at mile 3 on the Alaska Highway then took up homesteading land in Buick Creek. In the mid-1960s, they sold off the dairy herd and went into full time grain farming, putting in around 2000 acres a year. They had a great time curling and travelling together and after Mom died in 1989, Dad continued to farm and raise a few beef cattle. He kept up his horse-back riding and cross country skiing well into his 80s, and planted his garden into his 90s. Until COPD started to get the best of him, he thoroughly enjoyed the floor curling and regular dances at the Senior's Hall. He spent the last two years in the senior's apartments in Fort St. John and at Rotary Manor here in Dawson Creek, where because of his colourful character, he quickly became a favorite with the staff. This past July, Dad had a wonderful time seeing all his family one more time, visiting his eight grandchildren and meeting his six great grandchildren. He passed on peacefully on December 10, 2017 at 95 years of age. He was predeceased by Elisabeth, his wife of 40 years, sister Marie (Trueman), brother Glen, and daughter-in-law Sue. He leaves behind his children Brian, Brenda (Jack Pandachuck), Wayne (Cindy), and Donna (Glen Mielke); grandchildren Rae Haddow (Ross Pavan), Russel Haddow, Dennis (Niki) Pandachuck , Kerri (Justin) Chung , Shauna Haddow (Nathan Stretch), Tylynn Haddow, Gordon Mielke and Helene Mielke; and great-grandchildren Ruby Pandachuck, Lukas Pandachuck, Samuel Chung, Makena Chung, Lila Stretch, and Andrew Stretch. We would like to thank Bergeron Funeral Services for their personalized help with Dad's final interment, Marilyn Carroll for her leadership during the service, Deanna, Lisa and the other girls for caring for him in Fort St. John, and Nicole, Debbie and gang at Rotary Manor. Special thanks to Andre Lavoie and Ron Birchall for their many visits with Dad. You all helped him find meaning in his full, long life.
