Obituary of Jerry Knott

Jerry Knott, a long-time resident of Dawson Creek, B.C. passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2017 in Dawson Creek at the age of 76 years. Jerry Joseph Knott was born on July 2, 1941 in Gage, Alberta to Mariah Campbell and Walter Knott. His father passed away in World War II, and so his strong mother raised him and his siblings alone in Eureka River on a farm. His mother, may very well be the one who started his hard work ethic and she was a woman who Jerry said also had his signature hands. Keeping up a farm with five kids was a challenge and eventually his mother Mariah sold the farm and moved four of her children to Pouce Coupe while Jerry was in Fairview. In 1957, when Jerry was 16 he travelled to Pouce Coupe to join his family. Shortly after he was in Dawson Creek, Jerry moved to Sturgeon Lake and stay there for three years. It was here where Jerry began to learn how to run a power saw, a skill he would eventually master. His three year stay ended when his mother Mariah showed up one day and said that he had to pack his bags because she was taking him home. His stay in Dawson was short lived again because not too long after he caught a bus to Chetwynd. This is where he met his future wife Lillian. Jerry and Lillian got their own home in Moccasin Flats and in 1961 they welcomed their first child of five into their lives. From 1967 to 1971 Jerry worked on the pipepline from Wonowon to Vancouver. In 1967 the men of Moccasin Flats began to build Sesame Street. Jerry was around helping pour the concrete, lay the rebar, and build the houses that would soon be home to the Metis families of Moccasin Flats. Jerry Knott, as well as many of the other fathers and mothers of Sesame Street, built the literal foundation for our community growing up. Jerry started his career in logging around this time and worked for many different companies. It was here he began to put his power saw skills to use. Jerry built a name for himself over time because of his insane work ethic and fearlessness on the job. In the later years after Jerry was forced into retirement when his legs became weaker he became the family taxi driver that the kids could depend on. He was the man you could call on at any hour and he would pick you up. If you were scared of the weather conditions, you could call on Jerry and he would be there to literally see you through the storm. With his newfound time he also had more time to dote on Lillian and he would be with her almost every day. Jerry was predeceased by his loving parents Walter and Mariah Knott, his beloved brothers James and Thomas Knott, and cherished sisters Ruth and Edna Knott. Jerry leaves to mourn his wife Lillian, his sons Walter (Tumia), Richard (Shirley) and Raymond, his daughters Ruby and Ruth, his grandchildren Sonia, Tasha, Helen, Bruce, Rayanne, Jessica, Richie, Shane, Jared, J.J., Sienna, Sequia and Treylen, his great grandchildren Hailey, Aaliyah, Matthias, Riley, Reace, Nevaeh, Coby, Brayden and Penelope, along with numerous nieces, nephews, family and extended family, and many special friends.
