Obituary of Marie Close

Marie Anna Close, a long-time resident of Dawson Creek BC, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 3, 2018, in Dawson Creek, at the age of 96 years. Marie Close was born on Feb 14, 1922 at Heisler, Alberta to immigrant parents Anna and Magnus Rainer. She was the middle of 13 children. At 16 she went to work as a mothers helper. She moved on to be a kitchen helper at the Castor hospital and later as a waitress before meeting Nick Garlinski at a dance, whom she later married on Jan 8, 1943. They lived near Grande Prairie for a short time before moving to Dawson Creek the winter of 1944-45. They moved to the farm at Golata Creek in 1962. After the death of Nick in 1977, Marie married Bill Close in 1981. They traveled and camped until his death in 1983. Marie was a natural athlete who loved to run and play sports. Starting to bowl at about 55, she went on to win many awards. Later she moved to floor curling where her team won gold at the 1998 BC Senior Winter Games. She also loved to play cards, winning several Legion crib tournaments. If you get the cards, you can play them , she would often say. Hand and Foot Canasta at her apartment two or three nights a week was a staple. Marie got immense satisfaction from hard work but knew how to play also. She fixed almost everything around the house and yard, loved dancing, gardening (even after she moved to an apartment around 1986) and traveling (by car). In her lifetime, Marie saw immense change, going from the horse and buggy to driver-less cars and people going to the moon and beyond. Marie is loved and survived by her four children, Rose Garlinski, John (Judy) Garlinski, Marlene (Stuart) Johns, and Irene (Bob) Thola and her youngest sister, Aggie Rainer. A Memorial service was held on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 11:00 am, from Reynars Chapel. Reverend Marilyn Carroll officiated.
