Obituary of Auguste Blum

Auguste Wilemenia Blum (Johannsen) passed away on December 4, 2020, at the age of 94 in Dawson Creek, B.C. Auguste was born in Kiel, Germany in 1926 to Matilda and Heinrich Johannsen. Anyone who knew Auguste recognized the twinkle in her eye and always commented on her infectious smile. Being the only girl in the family, Auguste was an adventurous soul right from the get-go. Her happy-go-lucky spirit shined throughout her life, and was evident in many things she did, particularly if it involved going out dancing.even it did involve sneaking over the Berlin wall to get to a party. It was at one of these parties where Auguste met her soon to be husband Otto. After six months of dating, they were married in May of 1948 and set forth on an epic 70-year journey that involved numerous unbelievable adventures and countless entertaining stories. Before leaving Germany in 1954, Auguste and Otto welcomed their first two children: Gary, born in 1949, and Marlies in 1952. As Germany was still recovering from the war, Otto and Augustes brother Kurt decided they needed to pursue employment opportunities elsewhere. Confronted with the choice of moving to Africa, Australia or Canada, Kurt and Otto decided on Canada and went ahead of their families to look for jobs and accommodations. Auguste and her sister-in-law followed 3 months later packing up 5 kids aboard a week-long voyage by ship where they docked in Montreal. From there they took a coal train to Manitoba where they settled for many years and welcomed their third son Peter in 1957. In 1964, the family moved to Dawson Creek where they resided for the remainder of their lives. Auguste was an incredibly talented woman and an unbelievable cook and baker, however, trying to get a recipe from her was almost impossible. Just add it until it tastes good she would always say. Auguste made many wedding cakes for numerous people, as well as sold many beautiful knit and crocheted items that she made. Auguste was a loving and devoted Oma, and absolutely loved spending time with family. Christmas Eve was a particularly special time for Auguste as she could have the family together, and of course, a good reason for a party! Auguste was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Otto Blum, as well as her parents, and many siblings. Auguste is survived by her three children Gary (Pat), Marlies (Neil), Peter (Pat), brother Kurt Johannsen, as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Auguste will be incredibly missed, but know that she is happy up in heaven dancing with Opa. Due to current restrictions, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
